How Do Window Tints Work?

Window tinting is the process of applying a thin film of laminate to the windows of a vehicle, darkening the glass. By blocking UV light, window tints can help your car remain cool and comfortable, which is handy when travelling with young children or pets. Tinted windows will also reduce glare from sunlight or headlights when driving. Window tinting can enhance the security of your vehicle too, by concealing the interior of the car and its contents from view.

Applied to the inside of the glass, window tints are usually available in a choice of shades and are made to measure, so whatever the make or model of your vehicle, the tinted film will be precisely cut for a perfect fit.

How Long Do Window Tints Take?

The time it takes to apply window tints will depend on the size of the vehicle, how many windows it has, and the shape of the glass. Bigger windows or complex shapes will take longer to tint, but it generally takes 1.5 to 2 hours to tint the windows of the average car.

If existing tints need to be removed first, the process will take longer, and you should also allow for drying time before operating the window, as tinted windows can take up to three days to cure. For this reason, it’s recommended to have your windows tinted during dry weather and keep your vehicle under cover where possible for a few days after the tints have been applied.

Window Tint Laws in the UK

Window tinting is regulated by law in the UK. To ensure the driver retains a safe level of visibility, a tinted front windscreen must let at least 75% of light through, while tinted front side windows must let at least 70% of light through. The law doesn’t apply to tinting rear windscreen or rear passenger windows.

The police can use light measuring equipment to check tinted windows. If your windows are found to break the law, you could receive a prohibition notice that stops you using your vehicle until the tint is removed, or a penalty notice or court summons.

The best way to ensure that window tints meet the legal requirements is to have your windows tinted by a reputable company like Autotronix, so you know for sure that your vehicle is up to standard.

How Long Do Window Tints Last?

When applied correctly, window tints can last five years or more. Instead of a DIY installation, have your window tints fitted by a professional to ensure they will last. To prolong the lifespan of your tints, only use a glass cleaner that is suitable for tinted windows.
